Lígia Rafael & Fernando Martins : Mértola Museum Town
– 40 Years of archaeology and Heritage valuation
From the 1970’s onwards, heritage valuation is seen as a driver of development of small villages, where the local museum becomes a main tourist attraction. This has always been the biggest challenge in Mértola: to transform a rural village in south Alentejo into a centre of attraction, as a way of fixing population and invite tourists. |
Thus began a new stage, not as golden as it once was as port city, but full of knowledge about the roots of the territory and its potential. Raising awareness in regards to the importance of archaeological, historical and natural heritage, as well as involvement with local agents and the populations were at the core of this new stage of development.
Mértola Museum Town is therefore a benchmark project in the matter of investigations and heritage valuation, although it conforms to an innovative way of disclosure and dissemination of results and of knowledge.
