August 2021 :  Day excursion to the Monchique area

Visiting the Castelo de Alferce and the "promegalithic" sites at Esgravatadouro

In response to the grant given by the AAA for the food of the students participating in the excavations at the Castelo de Alferce and the "pro-megalithic sites of Cerro d'Oiro and Buço Preto (at Esgravatadouro), we were invited to visit the ongoing excavations.

In the morning we visited the site at Castelo de Alferce which is located on top of a hill with impressive views of the Algarve far to the east and south. After parking the cars we had to hike up the hill to reach the site.

Fábio Capela and Humberto Verissimo led us through the excavations and explained what was done until now and remains to be done in the (near) future. The fact is that the exact data of this castle remain a mystery. Although some tentative references can be found about similarly sounding castle names in the Moslem writings of the time, no direct proof has been found yet. The problem is also that the site has been vandalised and built upon in later times, some of it quite recently.

After a great lunch Faustino de Carvalho made a presentation about the “proto-megalithic” sites of Cerro d'Oiro and Buço Preto after which we went to visit these sites at Esgravatadouro.

Our thanks go to Fabio, Humberto and Faustino for inviting us and to João Gonçalves for organizing this excursion.
