January 2024 : Visit to excavations at Palmares golf course

Under the shadow of towering construction cranes that are erecting sprawling holiday homes, 25 of us bore witness to the existence of the remnants of ancient civilization. With the ocean in the distance and golfers putting on lush greens below, we viewed an excavation of Roman, Visigoth, and Moorish necropolis and depository.

Archaeologist Ana Resende gave us an excellent tour of the area. Her knowledge and enthusiasm for the work there was highly stimulating for our members. She described the history of this site, which includes Roman, Visigoth, and Moorish remains. We had the privilege of viewing and handling fascinating artifacts that had been collected during the excavation. These included some jewelry, pottery, and other artifacts. We wish to thank Archaeologist Ana Resende for her devoted attention to our club.

Thanks to João for making all the arrangements for this visit. A delicious pizza party awaited after the visit. Members enjoyed each others’ company, celebrating the chance to be part of a fine organization.
